Boston Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Started running in 1990 with goal of running one St. George Marathon, after watching Mark Nelson run his 1st marathon, to see why a person would want to run 26.2 miles. That was all it took to hook me I will be running my 19th St. George this year. My PR is 3:30 in 1999. I still have a goal to qualify for Boston before I am dead.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run short term

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run long term faster than today.

Personal:

I run with Paul Thomas, Wayne Fairbanks, Kevin Jessop (when he wakes up) and Ozzie the dog.

I have been married 31 yrs to JoLene she loves to run and has ran several SG marathons, but has a couple of injuries that keep her from running distance. 4 adult children ,of which my oldest Stacia has also ran 8 marathons, Jeremy her husband started running and will be running his 4th SG Marathon.

Bike ride with Kent from Orem to top of Suncrest. We looked over SL Valley saw very dark clouds, turned around to start ride home, and the storm hit us hard. We rode fast but the rain, hail and wind was faster, we too cover in a carport, and called Jo to meet us in Alpine to take us home, it was very cold. Stopped at convience store in Alpine to wait for Jo, has hot chocolate, we started to warm up, weather broke a little, we could have ridden home but we were soked and cold, so we rode home with Jo. It was alot of fun. rode 26 miles

Mouth of Canyon to Trefoil and back.

Very cool today, felt great!

Ran with Paul, Wayne, Kevin (he went short) Stacia & Jeremy came down from SLC to run with us, they went 18 miles.

Hundreds of runners on the trail today, it must be Marathon season.

5:45 am 42 degrees, dark

Ran 6 miles easy with Paul & Lyle. and Ozzie

We picked up another dog during this run, Paul tried being "Mean Paul" to get rid of it, to no avail. He followed us all the way home, Paul's dog tried to eat it. I put it in my truck and returned him to the spot he started running with us.

I did not feel any effects from Saturdays 20 miler, that is good.

I weighed myself before and after the run, to see how much I sweat during a run, 1 1/2 lbs. That is on a cool morning with little effort.I need to consumed at least 10 oz. of fluids for each of the 13 aid station to replenish what I am losing. That is alot of fluids. I have never drank that much during St. George, That is probably why my performance suffers. I am not going for a PR this year so I will experiment with floating along this year.

6 miles 2000 N. Hill and through Lindon, 48 degrees, Paul, Wayne, and Kevin .

Hills are always hard, I let gravity take me on the way down, feels good to have the legs move quicker.

Sweated 2 lbs today, I have never monitored this in the past, it is interesting to see how much water we lose when we run. Years ago when I was running with a heart rate monitor, I took note of how much higher my heart rate was at the end of a 15 miler, my speed was much slower than at the start, I did not drink much water as always. I surmised at the time that as we sweat our blood would get thicker and  our hearts are pumping sludge as we are running.2 lbs is about a quart of fluids down and that is only a 6 mile cool tempeture run.

Well, thanks again for the warm welcomes and I look forward to hearing from anyone.

Water tank hills with Paul & Wayne & ozzie the dog.

It sure is dark in the mornings!

I got up on my toes and pushed up the last hill, now if I could only push up all 5 hills.

I don't usually run on Fridays, I need the sleep from going to bed at 11pm or later and getting up at 5am and I like to have a day of rest before running long on Saturday.

Paul & I did not know what route to run, so we ran over to the High School track and ran slowly around, I just can't get myself to run 8 or even 8:30 pace this year. I almost wish it was because I was sick or something, sickness can be cured, if it is just because I am getting older, well, the only cure for getting older is....

I have a friend who has 3 registrations into the St. George Marathon that I believe are available. He has them because he is a sponser,  they gave him one, and I had asked him if he could get any more for a mother and daughter that had been training and did not get into SG. I was quite sure this friend could get them, but I waited until I received confirmation before informing the mother & daughter. By the time  I found out he did have them, they registerd in Top of Utah.  So I am quite sure he would like to see these used,  if you, or someone you know would like to run SG Marathon, let me know.

Amazing!  Friday afternoon I place an order with Raceready for shorts and shirt and here it is Monday before noon and I received the order.

Ran Easy with Paul toward mouth of Provo Canyon. I wanted to run more of a tempo run each day this week but today no motivation and legs felt tired. Actually I wanted to run fast but Paul could not keep up, so I elected to run his slow pace. Sometimes it hard to go so slow but it's what friends do.

Traditional pre SGM 10 mile  tempo from Trefoil to Mouth of Canyon. Paul, Wayne, Kevin, Micheal, Colin. 1:17:25  7:44 average, last mile was 7:18 Kevin pulled me along, we were still conversing, (even running fast can't shut me up) Talking made the time go quicker, I felt labored but oviously finishing with a 7:18, I was not maxed out. I could not run this pace for  20 miles let alone 26.2. I have been running at 9 minute pace and slower all year, it is encouraging to run faster even for only 10 miles downhill. I think I will try for a 3:45 SGM instead of 4 hrs. I am going for a 5 to 10 minute negative split.

Shoes felt great, drank Heed sports drink before the run, took a Guu Rocktane at Vivian Park, it kicked in and I was wired for speed. This year I will take more Guus than in the past and lots more water.
