Running Accomplishments:

Started running in 1990 with goal of running one St. George Marathon, after watching Mark Nelson run his 1st marathon, to see why a person would want to run 26.2 miles. That was all it took to hook me I will be running my 19th St. George this year. My PR is 3:30 in 1999. I still have a goal to qualify for Boston before I am dead.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run short term

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run long term faster than today.

Personal:

I run with Paul Thomas, Wayne Fairbanks, Kevin Jessop (when he wakes up) and Ozzie the dog.

I have been married 31 yrs to JoLene she loves to run and has ran several SG marathons, but has a couple of injuries that keep her from running distance. 4 adult children ,of which my oldest Stacia has also ran 8 marathons, Jeremy her husband started running and will be running his 4th SG Marathon.

We rode fast but the rain, hail and wind was faster, we too cover in a carport, and called Jo to meet us in Alpine to take us home, it was very cold. Stopped at convience store in Alpine to wait for Jo, has hot chocolate, we started to warm up, weather broke a little, we could have ridden home but we were soked and cold, so we rode home with Jo. It was alot of fun. rode 26 miles

5:45 am 42 degrees, dark

Ran 6 miles easy with Paul & Lyle. and Ozzie

We picked up another dog during this run, Paul tried being "Mean Paul" to get rid of it, to no avail. He followed us all the way home, Paul's dog tried to eat it. I put it in my truck and returned him to the spot he started running with us.

I did not feel any effects from Saturdays 20 miler, that is good.

I weighed myself before and after the run, to see how much I sweat during a run, 1 1/2 lbs. That is on a cool morning with little effort.I need to consumed at least 10 oz. of fluids for each of the 13 aid station to replenish what I am losing. That is alot of fluids. I have never drank that much during St. George, That is probably why my performance suffers. I am not going for a PR this year so I will experiment with floating along this year.

Welcome to the blog Larry! Good to see another one of Paul's running buddies join up.

BTW I'm one of Paul's work/WBR running buddies and have enjoyed running with you guys a few times on a Saturday up/down Provo canyon.

From Paul T on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 13:47:53

I already welcomed you to the blog when you commented on my blog, but now that you've actually logged a run, let me do it officially on your blog:

Welcome to the blog, Larry!

I've believed for a while that if you decided to blog it would significantly increase your odds of finally getting that BQ. I don't think 3 weeks is enough time to qualify this year, but if you blog faithfully I fully expect you to qualify next year.

I think you'll love the blog environment and thrive in it. It's an awesome community of good runners, and good people. You'll fit right in.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 13:48:56

Larry - welcome to the blog. I can easily lose more than 1.5 lb even on a cool morning, and I am not that heavy (145 lb). If anything I would argue that the ability to lose weight during a run would indicate how much liquid and glycogen you can store, and therefore it is good. Your performance probably suffers for a different reason. I'll be able to tell you better in 6 months after seeing your training throughout the year, but let's hope it'll stop suffering by then.

From Kerry on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 14:27:03

Welcome, Larry!!! It'll be good to stay in better touch and draw on some of your experience.

Every marathon seems like a bit of an experiment as you're always looking to improve and there are so many individual and external variables. I know that hydration and performance have a lot to do with each other, but I've found that even consuming roughly the same amount can yield different results (suggesting there are many other things in play). Two to three gulps per water station and four when I take an eGel seems to work for me.

From Kevin Jessop on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 19:37:58

Laaaaaarry - I clicked on your name just on the off-hand chance it was you. (I don't know many people named Larry other than you and a partner here at the firm) I was surprised to see that it is you.

Welcome!

From Larry on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 19:47:49

Thank you all for the welcome!

I look forward to getting faster just by blogging, and all these years I thought I needed more speed work and to lose weight. This will be alot more fun!

From Paul T on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 20:03:21

I'd like to bear my testimony...

To blog here implies recording mileage that you have run and describing your training efforts and results. You'll have so much fun blogging that you'll run good workouts just to have something good to blog about.

You'll run on days when you might have skipped a run in the past...people will make encouraging comments...you will be inspired by what others are doing...you'll get great advice that you'll want to try out...and on and on.

Along the way you'll find yourself running faster, losing that 10 pounds you've been wanting to lose for years, and finally qualifying for Boston. And it will be a lot more fun!

I bear my personal witness that these things are true...at least they have been for me.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 21:01:00

If you are running less than 60 miles a week, about the last thing you need to run a good marathon is speed work. Check the top ten list of training mistakes at

6 miles 2000 N. Hill and through Lindon, 48 degrees, Paul, Wayne, and Kevin .

Hills are always hard, I let gravity take me on the way down, feels good to have the legs move quicker.

Sweated 2 lbs today, I have never monitored this in the past, it is interesting to see how much water we lose when we run. Years ago when I was running with a heart rate monitor, I took note of how much higher my heart rate was at the end of a 15 miler, my speed was much slower than at the start, I did not drink much water as always. I surmised at the time that as we sweat our blood would get thicker and  our hearts are pumping sludge as we are running.2 lbs is about a quart of fluids down and that is only a 6 mile cool tempeture run.

Well, thanks again for the warm welcomes and I look forward to hearing from anyone.

You are one of those guys who goes and knocks on Karen's door to see if Paul can come out to play, aren't you?! Paul always makes it sound like you all have so much fun all the time! It will be good to hear other people's version too and see if Paul really does see the world through rose colored glasses! (He is one of the most positive people I know!) Anyway, it's good he has finally convinced you to join the blog! It looks like you can give a lot of advice to us newbies who are going to be running their very first marathon in 18 days!

I don't usually run on Fridays, I need the sleep from going to bed at 11pm or later and getting up at 5am and I like to have a day of rest before running long on Saturday.

Paul & I did not know what route to run, so we ran over to the High School track and ran slowly around, I just can't get myself to run 8 or even 8:30 pace this year. I almost wish it was because I was sick or something, sickness can be cured, if it is just because I am getting older, well, the only cure for getting older is....

I have a friend who has 3 registrations into the St. George Marathon that I believe are available. He has them because he is a sponser,  they gave him one, and I had asked him if he could get any more for a mother and daughter that had been training and did not get into SG. I was quite sure this friend could get them, but I waited until I received confirmation before informing the mother & daughter. By the time  I found out he did have them, they registerd in Top of Utah.  So I am quite sure he would like to see these used,  if you, or someone you know would like to run SG Marathon, let me know.

Traditional pre SGM 10 mile  tempo from Trefoil to Mouth of Canyon. Paul, Wayne, Kevin, Micheal, Colin. 1:17:25  7:44 average, last mile was 7:18 Kevin pulled me along, we were still conversing, (even running fast can't shut me up) Talking made the time go quicker, I felt labored but oviously finishing with a 7:18, I was not maxed out. I could not run this pace for  20 miles let alone 26.2. I have been running at 9 minute pace and slower all year, it is encouraging to run faster even for only 10 miles downhill. I think I will try for a 3:45 SGM instead of 4 hrs. I am going for a 5 to 10 minute negative split.

Shoes felt great, drank Heed sports drink before the run, took a Guu Rocktane at Vivian Park, it kicked in and I was wired for speed. This year I will take more Guus than in the past and lots more water.

The SGM is like Christmas, and we are all wondering what time the Marathon Santa is going to bring us. Have we been good boys and girls and did all of our trianing? We might get a shiney PR for Marathon Christmas. Have we been bad boys and girls and ate poorly and trianed like spoiled brats? We might get rocks for legs and a a big wall for the Marathon Christmas.

Wayne will be running 3:15 to 3:20 @ SGM  and needs (wants) someone to run with!!! Will someone respond?

Well that was Fun! I like the rain, I do not like headwind, but I could look at it as a nice cool breeze. I would take this weather over hot weather most of the time. I did not drink as much as normal, I did take 4 gu's 2 of them were Rocktanes, I like 'em! talk about power boost. Paul would have gone under 3:00 if he would have taken 5 Rocktanes, in fact he would probably still be chasing his tail, he would have so much energy. Kevin & I ran the whole way together, we had a great time, we started with Stacia & Jeremy but they fell behind before Snow Canyon, Stacia was so cold, she almost perished, friends handed her a jacket and hat at Snow's, or she would not have finished, as it was, she was still so cold her legs barely functioned, she can't take in any fuel as she runs, so alot of her energy went to keeping her alive instead of her legs to keep her moving. The cool weather made be believe I did not need the fuel  with the electrolytes but I took it anyway to test the effects as I ran, I now know that fuel is also good  in the cold. When Kevin and I were in the finishers area, Kevin's father in law was there, which Kevin expected him, what he did not expect was the news Rusty (his father in law) had for him. Kevin's father passed away this morning, no illness, it was a shock. Kevin is a great friend and I feel for his loss, during the run we had discussed the passing of loved ones and how fortunate we are to know there is an afterlife and how we will be with them again.

A couple of notes I need to make for next year: We meet before the race at 5am not 5:30, it was not much of a problem, but it could be. Also we started way too far back in the pack, we bobbed and weaved to get past the 5:30 pack, we ran an extra mile at least.I also need to pack all the gu into my race ready shorts and run around to see if my pant are going to fall down, I almost lost them. This year I shut off the auto lap on my gps watch so I could click on ea. mile marker instead of the gps miles, they were almost identical so no need to worry about watching and clicking. Somehow I shut my watch off 13 seconds after I started it, I don't know how that happened, never had it before, during training. I turned it back on at mile 3. I also need to take the Rocktane on a 20 mile run early and often to see if any ill effects, ie burnout. Legs feel great, Wayne & I are going to run Tuesday  7:30 a.m. later but more daylight.
